Grand Final win for the Huonville Lions Colts

The Huonville Lions Football Club would like to congratulate Jimmy Bell and the boys in a inspirational win last week. For the boys to come back like they did after half time, showed character and a great deal of dedication. Well done.
Congratulations to the Cygnet Football Club in winning back to back flags in the seniors regional competition. A great win to Garry Williamson and the boys from the Port.
The club would like to thank Gary and Kathy Longey for their hospitality in hosting all of the boys, families and supporters after the game on Saturday for celebrational drinks. Lets bring the cup home
The finals campaign has not been kind to the Lions Colts. With a large amount of injuries and illness over the last three weeks it has been hard for the boys to get up to their normal high standard of football. It was pleasing however to see Matt Sullivan, Matt McCulloch and David Langston back in the side for the preliminary final. All three pulled up well and played a good consistent game.
The final against Kermandie was a torrid hard fought game which will do the boys the world of good for the grand final encounter this week. The previous weeks of rest in between games did not help the boys. Well done to Brad Johns and Brad Lovell who played their best games of the year. Tony & Ricky Lovell were again dominant throughout the game. David Langston also played a very hard and committed game across the backline. Chris Barton has done very well as each week has progressed, the extra responsibilities against the Roo’s were no challenge to him. Jed Crouch playing his first game down back was also not taking anything lightly, well done Jed. Others to play well were Andrew Paul and Patrick Kelly.
Congratulations to Scott McQueen and the Kermandie Under 17’s for their efforts throughout the year. Special mention goes to the way they fought out the Preliminary final and especially their display of good sportsmanship at the end of the game.
Every effort is required this week from ALL concerned at the Lions to help bring the premiership home.
Sponsors, supporters and members are encouraged to get along to the clubrooms this Thursday night to support our boys in their preparation for this week’s game. Drinks will be available from 6.00 pm from the top bar, with teas being served at approx 7.30 pm.
The Huonville Lions Football Club would like to call on all supporters to get along to this weekends game and show your support for the young Lions in this weekend’s grand final that is to be played at Nth Hobart vs. Dodges Ferry.
Supporters that wish to travel to the ground via the supporter’s bus are required to call Scott Wilcox 0419 361 489 or to get along on Thursday night to advise the committee that you would like to travel on the bus. The bus will leave at approx 8.30 am and will return soon after the colts game. Good luck to Jimmy and all of the boys for this weekends game.

Under 17’s reap rewards
After the good efforts of the under 17's the rest of the day did not go according to plan.
The reserves game was played in heavy conditions. The Lions were again undermanned as a result of the long list of injured senior players. From the start the Cygnet team took control of the game. Johnny Butt, Steven Fiddler, Steve Reeve and the Parremore brothers were trying hard but the Lions struggled to get the ball onto its forward line. The Lions managed their only goal for the first half just before half time, by half time the game was well and truly out of reach. The second half was a carbon copy of the first, but to the boys’ credit they battled on until the final siren with the well-drilled Cygnet team running out easy winners.
Needing to win to secure a spot in the final five the senior team hit the ground fired up and soon had the first goal on the board. With the back line standing firm and providing run through the middle of the ground the Lions went into quarter time with a slight advantage. The second quarter started as a battle of the backlines with some good defensive marks being taken by both teams. By the twenty minute mark of the second quarter the Huonville Lions supporters had found their voices with the Lions leading by three goals and a finals berth looked a real possibility. Cygnet then put on a devastating display of running team football, that shows why they are sitting on top of the ladder, kicking five goals in eight minutes to go into the half time break with a fourteen point lead. After half time the Lions battled hard, but every time Huonville Lions got the ball forward and goaled the Power would answer with two or more goals. Cygnet eventually cruised to a convincing win. For the Huonville Lions no one tried harder than Nick Fooks with other good contributions from Michael Ryan, Dean Harris, Matt Quarrier, Gus Nandan, James Lange and Matt Sullivan
The club held its Best and Fairest count on Saturday night. Within all three grades there was only the smallest of margin between 2 players at the end of the count.
Congratulation goes to James Lange in winning the seniors, just one vote away from the coach Nathan Longman. In the reserves Johnny Butt finished of the year strongly to win the medal, just one vote from Grant Dare. The underage Best and Fairest went to Andrew Paul with Joel Martyn just 2 votes behind.
The club would like to thank all of those club members and supporters that helped out during the super rules grand final day. The seniors did a great job as time keepers and scorers, the reserves did a great job as goal umpires and the underage were inspirational in the way in which they carried out their duties as boundary umpires.
The club needs to get behind Jimmy Bell and the underage to ensure that we provide them with the necessary support needed during the finals series. The underage will be training on Tuesday and Thursday nights for the remainder of the season and all supporters are encouraged to get along and show your support during these nights. Player’s teas and drinks will still be available on Thursday nights so get along and support the Lions.

1 win 2 losses
The reserve game was played in reasonable conditions. The smaller players in Shannon Woolley, Tim Thorpe and Johnny Butt were working hard and were being supported by the big man Simon Direen. It is great to see the big man Simon Direen back in the Lions colors and he played a great game. The boys tried to match it with the Cats early but were unable to maintain the intensity and pressure to be any real threat to the Cats. Shannon Woolley, Simon Direen and Dean Parremore tried hard all day along with onballers Tim Thorpe and Johnny Butt. The end result on the scoreboard was not a true record of the effort that the Lions applied, the boys are under man and have been hit hard with injuries and with players being unavailable due to sickness and work commitment it has been a real struggle. Coach Steven Reeve will be looking at finishing the season off as best as possible and he needs all of the players on board to the end of the season. Lets all get behind Runner and show our support and finish of the season in the best way possible.
The senior game was a must win game for the boys. The game started at a high pace and the Cats managed to kick the first goal. The Lions hit back and kept in touch in the first quarter. Stuart James was working hard on the forward line and was being well supported by Jarrod Bennett and onballers Nick Fooks and Nick Doyle. In the second quarter the Lions managed to kick 4 goals and by the long break the margin was 24 points in favor of the Cats. The third quarter was a going to be a very critical quarter. The Cats took the initiative and kicked 9 goals to the Lions single goal. By the end of the third quarter the game was out off reach of the Lions and they needed to finish the last quarter off to retrieve some much-needed pride. In the last quarter the Lions managed to kick 3 goals and the Cats run out winners by 69 points. The better players on the day were Stuart James, Adam Elwell, Nick Fookes, and Mathew Quarrier. The Lions have been in the five all year but know find themselves out of the five due to a low percentage. This weekend’s game against Claremont is a mini final, a win will hopefully put the Lions back in the five and the aspirations of playing finals is still possible. All of the players need to get behind the coach and show your support and get the Lions back were we belong and in the five. The club would like to thank Steven Longey from Goodyear Tyre and Brake for his support on Saturday. This weekend we have a primary school game that will be played in place of the underage game. This game will start at approx 10.30 am. The annual event of the ladies vs. the colts will be played after the senior game and should be a real treat for the spectators. Come along and show your support for the club and cheer on all the sides in what is our last home game for the season. This weekend’s sponsor will be Jackmans Bodyworks.

Bad Day for Lions
The Lions traveled to Channel last weekend in what was crucial game for the seniors.
The reserves started well and kept in touch with the Saints in the first quarter. Big Nathan Reynolds needed to leave the ground with an injury that left the Lions very short on big fellas. Tim Thorpe and Johnny Butt were working hard in the centre and Ricky Brown was providing an avenue to goal on the forward line. Craig Thorpe was his elusive self on the forward line and kicked 2 goals in the first quarter.
In the second quarter the Saints got their game flowing and piled on the goals. Shannon Woolley and Jason Pyke was trying hard along with Grant Dare and Dean Parremore.
By half time the Lions trailed the Saints and went to the long break with a lot of work to do. Steven Reeve tried some positional moves in an attempt to lift the Lions. The Lions were unable to match it with the Saints and they ran out winners by 90 points.
The senior game was a must win for the Lions. The Lions went into the game with a few injured players and this ended up being a telling factor in the final score. Nick Vermey and Tony Lovell were brought into the side from the underage, and they both presented themselves very well.
In the first quarter it was the Saints who opened up an early lead. Nick Fookes and Adam Elwell were providing plenty of run out of the backline and Nick Doyle was being his normal damaging self. Jarrod Bennett was a focal point on the forward line.
Nick Vermey was taking some goods marks around the ground and was working hard in the ruck against much bigger opponents. Tony Lovell kicked the Lions first 2 goals and was working had on the forward line.
By half time the Lions had pegged back the margin and trailed by 2 goals.
In the last half the Lions had plenty of opportunities but turned the ball over too easily and the Saints capitalised on these mistakes and made the Lions hurt on the score board. By the end of the third quarter the Saints had opened the lead out to 5 goals and the Lions had plenty of work to do if they were to get back in the game.
Nathan Longman was trying hard to lift the Lions but they struggled to respond and the Saints ran out winners by 18 points.
The better players for the Lions were Adam Elwell, Jarrod Bennett who finished with 8 goals, Nick Fookes, young Tony Lovell and for his first game this year, Charlie Reeve.
The Lions travel to Kermandie this weekend to take on the Kangaroos. The seniors need the support of all of our supporters for the remainder of the games to ensure that we are playing come finals time.
Get along and support the Lions.
3/7/03 3 good wins for the Lions
The reserves were keen to notch up their third win for the year when they took the field on Saturday with some old faces. When I say old faces means old faces as in their age. With some experience back in the side the boys started off well and managed to get the first few goals on the board. Big Nathan Reynolds was getting his hand on the ball and providing Johnny Butt and Tim Thorpe with first use of the ball. The backline was being well held by Chris Shaw, Scott Fisher, Dean Parremore and Jarrod Lovell. Ricky (Jumbo) Brown was brilliant on the forward line and was converting well with his kicking for goal.
By half time the Lions had a good lead and went into the long break with confidence.
The trend continued for the second half with the Priest brothers playing well and with Ricky Brown’s kicking for goal being one of the highlights. The main highlight in the second half was when the bigman himself “walked” to full forward. His presence on the field lifted everyone and the Lions managed to pile on the goals and run out easy winners. The big fella was inspirational in kicking a goal himself and if you ask him he was responsible for setting up 4 others.
A good morale boosting win for Runner and the boys. The goal of finishing in the five is not out of reach and Runner is using this to inspire the boys to finish off the season well.
The seniors needed to win this game to keep clear of Channel. The game started with the Lions kicking the first few goals and went into the first break with a 19 point lead. Coach Nathan Longman was leading from the front and providing plenty of opportunities for the forwards. Jarrod Bennett was leading well and was being well supported by Trent Lovell.
Onballers Nick Doyle, James Lange and Mitch Sullivan were working hard along with Nick Fookes and Chris Glenn. The backline was being held together with Garry Barwick, Stuey Baldwin and Phil Bumford. By half time the Lions had maintained their lead.
After the half time break the Lions managed to keep the Blues at bay and run out winners by 44 points. Nathan Longman was the Lions best player and was well supported by the other onballers and Cameron Jones who did a great job in the ruck.
Today the Lions play at home against Dodges Ferry. This is a must win for the seniors to provide themselves with the opportunity to jump to forth position. The reserves must win to keep their finals aspirations alive. The underages are unbeaten at this stage and will be keen to keep this record in tack when they take on Dodges who are currently second on the ladder.
A reminder that the Huonville Lions Football Club will be holding a presentation and fun night for the Tiny Tots entrants at the clubrooms on the 4th July at 6.00 pm. Food and drinks will be available, along with entertainment for the kids. Admission will be by donation.

Fans out in force for 300th against Cygnet
The Lions hosted old time rivals Cygnet on Saturday and celebrated Stuey Baldwins 300th game. The weather was very kind and the supporters from the Huon Valley were out in force to support their team.
The reserves that are struggling with numbers due to the large injury list in both the seniors and reserves hit the ground with the bare numbers. Johnny Butt, Craig Thorpe and coach Steven Reeve tried hard to get the Lions fired up. The Cygnet team took control of the game from the start and never gave the Lions a look in. Cian Irving played well in his first game for the Lions. David Priest and Mick Thorpe played a very solid game in defence and Grant Dare tried hard all day. The end result was a big win to the Port and the Lions need to regroup to get a win on the board to lift the spirits of the players.
The seniors run out in style with Stuey Baldwin being the main attraction celebrating his milestone of 300 games. The Lions had a lot to play for and coach Nathan Longman had asked for a big lift from all of his players. The boys responded and in the first quarter the Lions managed to kick 2 goals and hold the Port early, but the Port pilled on 3 goals late in the quarter to blow the lead out to 4 goals. The Lions held the Port again in the second quarter and managed to peg the lead back to 3 goals and to keep in touch. Nick Doyle was playing well on the ball and backline, with Nick Fookes being his regular hard at it type player and coach Nathan Longman was also playing well. Mathew Quarrier and James Lange were working hard in defence and Gus Nandan was providing a focal point on the forward line.
After half time the Lions kept in touch with the Port but were unable to mount a challenge. The Port run out winners by 42 points.
The Huonville Lions would like to thank Mitre 10 (Game day sponsor) for their support during the day.
The Lions travel to Lindisfarne this weekend for a must win for all 3 grades. Lets get along and support our teams just as we do when they play at home. The players do really appreciate the support of all of our supporters and sponsors and are keen to repay them for their efforts with 3 good win this weekend.
Huonville Lions Football Club will be holding a presentation and fun night for the Tiny Totts entrants at the clubrooms on the 4th July at 6.00 pm. Food and drinks will be available, along with entertainment for the kids. Admission will be by donation.

Good win for Lions
The Lions travelled to Claremont last weekend and played in real winter conditions. Due to the Claremont football club not being able to fill an underage team there was only the 2 games played.
The reserves game was played in the worst conditions on the day. The Lions were undermanned from the start and the Claremont team took control of the game early. Jarrod Lane was winning nearly every tap and the smaller players in Johnny Butt, Shannon Woolley and Steven Fiddler were trying hard but the Lions struggled on the forward line to convert. By half time the game was out of reach for the Lions and the Claremont team run out easy winners. The Parremore brother's both played well on the backline and was assisted by Jarrod Lovell and Nathan Reynolds.
The senior game was a must win game for the Lions. The boys started well and by half time a good break on the Claremont team. Jarrod Bennett was a focal point up forward and up until half time he had kicked 3 goals. James Lange and Mathew Quarrier were playing well and Nick Fookes was getting plenty of possessions.
In the third quarter the Lions had a big lapse and they let the Claremont boys back into the game. In the last quarter at one stage the score were level and the Lions needed to find something to get themselves over the line. James Lange took a mark on the forward line and converted to put the Lions 6 points up. The Lions went forward again and managed to kick another goal to put the game out of reach of the Claremont boys. At the final siren the Lions won by 11 points.
Stuey Baldwin reaches a milestone this weekend when he plays his 300 th game. Congratulations to Stuey and we hope that the boys rally to the occasion when we take on Cygnet at Huonville this weekend.
The club is holding a Country and Western night at the Mt River hall this weekend and it should be a great night, so put on that cowboy hat and the country and western gear and get along for a great night.
The club is also holding a golf day at the Huon Valley golf club this Sunday starting at 10.00 am. If you haven't got a team in and still wish to participate in the 3 man abrose competition then please ring Scott Wilcox on 0419 361 489.

No answers to Cat onslaught
The Reserves game started in warm sunny conditions with a strong breeze blowing to the bottom end of the Lauderdale ground. Huonville had first use of the breeze and with some good quick movement of the ball through the middle of the ground posted early goals, but unfortunately the Lions allowed Lauderdale to score some valuable easy goals against the breeze. In the second quarter Lauderdale peppered the goals and although the undermanned Lions tried hard to stem the flow of scoring shots, Lauderdale went into half time with what proved to be a match winning lead. The second half followed the same lines as the first with the Lions more experienced players trying to lift the team, but in the end having no real answers for a very fit and more skilled Lauderdale team. Good performances from Gus Nandan, John Butt, Grant Dare, Trent Lovell and first gamer Jarrod Lane who never stopped trying all day.
An injury depleted senior team took to the field with the breeze becoming stronger and colder. Lauderdale won the toss and kicked with the breeze and had two goal on the board within the first three minutes of the game, before the Lions steadied to go in at quarter time 24 points down and the advantage of kicking with what was a four to five goal wind in the second quarter. The second quarter opened with the Lions kicking two of the first three goals and the prospect of Huonville going into half time with a lead looked a real possibility. Mathew Quarrier at both ends of the ground was outstanding along with Peter Barwick, James Lange, Nick Fooks and Nathan Longman who all worked hard at ground level. Lauderdale's superior height and marking power, especially on their forward line enabled them to still managed 4 goals against the breeze and went into the half break with a 14 point advantage. The third quarter was going to be the make or break quarter for the Lions and for the first 10 minutes of the quarter it appeared that they may hold Lauderdale to a five or six goal lead, giving them a chance with the breeze in the last quarter. But about the half way mark of the quarter the wind changed direction to blow straight across the ground. Along with the wind change came a change in the game with Lauderdale taking control of the game kicking 4 goals to the Lions 1 point. From that point the Lauderdale's player's confidence started to grow and went on to kick another 5 goals in the last quarter to the Lions single goal.
Hopefully with the weeks break over the long weekend this will give a chance for some of the long list of injured players to recover and be available for what is now a very important game for both the senior and reserve teams.

Two from three for the Lions
The Huonville Lions recorded 2 wins and one loss against the Kermandie Kangaroos. The underage had another good win and the reserves hung on to win a close game. The seniors were in the game until three quarter time but where overpowered by the Kangaroos in the last quarter.
The reserve game started with both sides playing some desperate footy. The Lions were being well supported through Grant Dare, Tim Thorpe and Shannon Woolley. The forward line was working well with big man Tony Russell providing a much-needed target, and with the smaller players in Craig Thorpe and Steven Reeve being able to crumb and kick goals.
Charlie Reeve, James Irving and Gus Nandan were playing well on the backline and Trent (Layton) Lovell was playing a great game. By half time the Lions had a small break and were keen to notch up their second win for the year.
It took the Lions up until the very last minutes of the last quarter to shake off the Kangaroos. Tony Russell kicked a goal after the siren to add to the final lead (much to the disgust of the Kangaroos) to win the game for the Lions by 9 points.
The senior game started a frantic pace with a battle of the backlines. The Lions kicked 2 goals and the Kangaroos were kept in the game through their coach who kicked their first 2 goals. Both teams were playing some good hard footy and at the end of the first quarter the Kangaroos had a 2-point break.
In the second quarter the Lions stepped up the pressure, Coach Nathan Longman was playing well and was being supported by Peter Barwick, Nick Fookes and backline players Nick Crouch, Adam Elwell and Mathew Quarrier. At the long break the Lions had an 8-point lead.
In the third quarter the Kangaroos applied plenty of pressure and retained the lead. The Lions kicked a goal on the siren at three quarter time to stay in touch. Garry Barwick was playing well on the forward line and was being supported by Phil Bumford and Todd Cordwell. Tony Lovell was working hard and providing plenty of opportunities for his teammates.
In the last quarter the Kangaroos overpowered the Lions to run out winners by 28 points. Coach Nathan Longman was the Lions best and was furious about the loss and will be working hard this week to get the boys back on track when we play Lauderdale at Lauderdale this weekend.
The Huonville Lions Football Club would like to thank Ray Priest from Huon Dental Clinic for donating a trophy to the best players on the ground. Ray presented the trophy to Adam Dermoudy after the game and advised both clubs that he would be making this an annual event.
This weekend we travel to Lauderdale and we need "your" support to get all 3 sides over the line.

Sponsor Advertising Directory
Huonville Lions Football Club is now circulating the first edition of the clubs Sponsor Advertising Directory. This is a publication that explains our sponsorship aims for season 2003 and gives the community, members and supporters the opportunity to see exactly who is sponsoring the Huonville Lions Football Club in season 2003 and the goods and / or services that these businesses have to offer. The Sponsors Advertising Directory is also an opportunity for advertisers (sponsors of the HLFC) to network each others goods and / or services and to have access to the members and supporters of the Huonville Lions Football Club. There are two main reasons that a business sponsors a football club, firstly a love of football and or the football club, but the number one reason most business choose to sponsor a football club is for the opportunity to increase their costumer base and hopefully the businesses bottom line. Advertising, a customer base and customer loyalty is one of the things that we as a football club can offer the potential sponsor and current club sponsors. Simply if we as a football club do not support the local business, they in turn can not help support us.
As always Thank you to all our sponsors, and remember TO SUPPORT THOSE THAT SUPPORT US !!

Lions take control
The reserves are improving each week and this week was no exception. Johnny Butt and Tim Thorpe worked hard in the centre to capitalise on the good work of Nathan Reynolds. The forwards were struggling to make the most of their opportunities and by the end of the first quarter the Saints had a slender lead.
In the second quarter the Lions kept themselves in the game with some good work from the smaller players in Spider Carmichael, Trent Lovell, Shannon Woolley and Michael Thorpe.
In the last quarter the Lions continued to work hard and struggled to convert on the forward line. The boys had plenty of chances in the last quarter to snatch the victory from the Saints but just missed out and went down by the solitary 1 point. A good effort from Runner and the boys.
The senior game started with the Lions kicking the first few goals and the Saints came back at them in the last few minutes of the quarter just keeping touch with the Lions. Chris Glenn was playing well in the centre and was setting up plenty of forward thrusts. Gary Barwick was a focal point on the forward line and Stuey James was responsible for setting up a few early goals.
The second quarter saw the Lions open the lead out to 4 goals. Adam Elwell and Mathew Quarrier were holding the backline together and Todd Cordwell was adding plenty of pace and excitement to the Lions running game. Craig Studley kicked 2 goals in the quarter and looked good on the forward line.
After the long break the Saints came back at the Lions and got to within 2 goals before the Lions took control again and opened up a 5 goal break before going into the last quarter. The Lions ran out winners by 38 points at the end. In what was a reasonable effort, the team had little lapses during the day that it needs to work on to make sure that they are ready for the Kermandie Kangaroos this weekend.
Come along to support all three teams this weekend when we play Kermandie at Huonville, this is a must win game for our seniors.

Bad day for the Lions
The Reserves game started in fine but very cool conditions. Dodges Ferry showed that they had come to play, slotting through four goals before the Lions had got out of first gear, and at quarter time the Lions trailed by 30 points. The second quarter started off in a similar fashion and if it had not been for Dodges Ferry's inaccuracy in front of goal the game would have been all over half way through the second quarter. The only high light of the first half was the good work in the ruck and up forward of Nathan Reynolds and Todd Cordwell's run through the middle of the ground.
After some well-chosen words from the coach at half time the Lions bounced out and kicked a goal within the first minute of the third quarter. The rest of the third quarter was an even affair with both sides kicking three goals. Cordwell, Dare, Nandan and Woolley all started to get their hands on the ball and with solid defence from the back line, lead by Parremore the Lions were at lest holding their own.
The final quarter started with six unanswered goals from the Lions and with five minutes left on the clock were only eleven points down and looked a chance of pinching the win, but two late steadying goals from Dodges Ferry was enough to give them the win. Another inconsistent performance from a Reserves team that must learn to put four consistent quarters of football together before they can expect the results to come their way.
The senior game started with the Sharks taking control in the centre of the ground and they moved the ball forward with ease to set up forward moves. Craig Studley was getting his hand on the ball first but the onballers were unable to capitalise on his work and the Sharks onballers were sharking his taps and working harder than the Lions. By the end of the first quarter the Sharks had a handy lead. The Lions struggled up forward and lacked commitment and endeavour at the ball.
In the second quarter the trend continued with the Sharks maintaining the pressure on the Lions. James Lange, Nick Fookes and Mathew Quarrier were trying hard but were unable to fire up the Lions. By the end of the second quarter the Sharks had a 29-point break.
In the second half the Sharks kept up their intensity and the Lions struggled to get their game going. Boggy Lovell and Gary Barwick where the most effective forward with 2 goals each in what was a poor performance from the Lions.
The boys need to regroup this week in what is a must win game against Channel. Lets all get behind Nathan and the boys this week to show our support and keep our finals vision alive.
Don't forget to come along to the mud wresting event this week at the clubrooms, it sure to be a great night.

2 good wins for the Lions
The reserves game started at a reasonable pace with Lindisfarne pilling on a few goals and the Lions were struggling to convert on the forward line. Troy Cordwell was playing well in the centre and was creating plenty of opportunities for his teammates with his creative play. Basil McKenzie was rucking well and providing the smaller players with first use of the ball, Michael Thorpe and first gamer Grant Dare were playing well and Spider Carmichael was being his creative self on the wing. The Lions were struggling to get their game going and with David Priest trying hard they managed to put a few scores on the board through Gus Nandan and Grant Dare. The Lions struggled in the wet and cold conditions and were under man, with coach Steven Reeve out and other key forwards due to injuries. The Lindisfarne Blues run out easy winners with the Lions licking their wounds with a bit of work to do to get back on the winning track.
The senior game was played in cold and typical winter weather. The Lions started reasonably well by kicked 3 goals in the first quarter. Jamie Huddleston was providing opportunity for his on ballers until he had to leave the ground with a back compliant. He later returned and played out the game and was one of the better players on the day. Peter Barwick was make the most of Hudda's work and moved the ball into the forward line to set up plenty of opportunities for the forwards. James Lange started to get into the game when he was moved onto the ball and created plenty of headaches for the opposition.
The backline was being well held by Mathew Quarrier and first gamer for the year Adam Elwell. Nick Fookes was being his consistent self and Rodney (Boggy) Lovell was being the most effective forward. By half time the Lions had a 3goal lead and went the long break to regroup and set up for the last half.
In the last half the weather didn't improve, but the Lions managed to extend their lead out to 6 goals and put the game out of reach of Lindisfarne. Peter Barwick continued to play well and Rodney Lovell was kicking goals and being well supported by Gary Barwick and Phil Bumford who chipped into to help out when needed. James Lange continued with his good form and managed to kick a few goals himself and the Lions run out winners by 43 points.
The Lions travel to Dodges Ferry this week in what will be a good tester and a must win game to maintain a spot in the top three.
Remember on the 17th May the club will be holding the Mud Wrestling event. One of the main attractions is going to be the rematch of the Mighty Wombat and the Mighty Spider. Come along support the club and more importantly have a good laugh in what should be a great night.

Mixed Results
A good win to the Reserves and a frustrating loss for the Seniors were the results from last Saturday for the Channel Football Club, taking on the Claremont Magpies at Abbotsfield Park. Both the reserves and seniors played a similar game on Saturday against the Cygnet Port. Both teams were in the game up until half time but run out of steam in the last half. The under 17s played another excellent game and kept their winning streak in tack.
The reserves started well with first gamers Scott Chilcott, Darren Glenn and Shannon Woolley all playing well for the Lions. Scott (Spider) Carmichael was in everything in his first game for the season and the Priest brothers were both playing well. At the end of the first quarter the Lions had a slender lead and had kicked 4 straight goals. In the second quarter the Lions maintained accurate kicking and went into the half time break with a small lead. Charlie Reeve was put into the ruck in the third quarter and had his work cut out against the much bigger opponents. To Charlie’s credit he tried hard and was able to provide plenty of opportunities to his onballers. The Lions struggled to convert up forward and the Port was kicking goals from everywhere on their forward line. The backline was under fire with the Priest brothers and Dale Parremore standing tall and repelling many attacks.
In the last quarter the Port maintained the pressure and run out the game much better than the Lions to record a 71point victory.
The senior game started at a frantic pace with the Lions onballers working hard and providing the forwards with plenty of opportunity. Nick Doyle, Nathan Longman and Nick Fookes were playing well and Stuey James was a focal point on the forward line. Cameron Jones was rucking well against much bigger opponents. At the end of the first quarter the Lions were 3 points in front and were playing well with a depleted side from last week.
The second quarter saw the trend continue with either side being able to get a break away, the backline was playing well with Mathew Quarrier, Nick Crouch, James Lange and Dean Harriss all playing well. At the end of the quarter the Port kicked a goal on the siren and had a 6-point margin.
After the long break the Lions were not able to get their game plan going, with Stuey James off the ground due to injury. The Lions struggled up forward and the Port started to get on top in the center of the ground and the Lions backline was under fire. The Port played their best football in the last half and the Lions struggled to maintain the intensity. The Port pilled on the goals and the Lions looked flatfooted and under manned. To add more injury worries to the Lions they lost their young star Nick Doyle in the last 5 minutes with a serious shoulder injury. The Port ran out big winners in what was a blow out at the end, the Lions played well for half of the game but struggled in the last half to match it with the Port. Good luck to all 3 sides this weekend when they play Lindisfarne at Huonville this weekend.
The club would like the wish the following players a speedy recovery from their serious injuries, Michael Ryan, Darren Cantwell, Wade Parremore and Nick Doyle. All the best boys we need back on the track as soon as possible.

2 good wins for the Lions
The Huonville Lions under U17s had the weekend off due to the Claremont Football club being unable to fill an under age side again this year.
The reserves were very confident to notch up their first win with one of their better side selected to play against the Claremont boys at home.
The game was played in magnificent weather conditions, with the game starting at a slow pace. The Claremont Magpies were playing well and the Lions had to lift their performance to keep in touch in the first quarter The Lions were struggling up forward to convert with Johnny Butt and Gary Priest were playing well. Nathan Reynolds was rucking well and the big fella was getting his hand on plenty of the ball.
In the second quarter Michael Burdon added a bit of spark to the onballers and the Lions started to get their game going. Craig Thorpe was being effective on the forward line and Steven Runner Reeve kicked a couple of goals. Martin Doyle was playing well on the backline and Charlie Reeve was getting plenty of the ball. The big forwards in Gus Nandam and Christian Moore was also being effective and provided many opportunities for the smaller forward when they where unable to convert themselves.
In the third quarter the Magpies came back at the Lions, but the Lions were able to maintain a small margin and went into the last quarter with a slender lead. In the last quarter the Lions played some of their better football and ran out winners by 22 points. A good win for Runner and the boys, who need to continue working hard on the track and notch up a few more early wins.
The seniors were keen to keep their winning form when they hit the ground with one of the better sides that had been selected for the season. In the first quarter it was goal for goal and the Lions were playing well below their best. Nick Doyle was playing well and Stuey James was converting up forward. Jamie Huddleston was being his normal athletic self and was proving plenty of opportunity for the onballers and forwards. Captain Michael Ryan was playing well in the centre and the backline was being held together well by vice captain Mathew Quarrier and Stuey Baldwin.
In the second quarter the contest continued with both sides going goal for goal. The difference at half time being 1 point in favour of the Lions. The Lions had injury worries losing their captain Michael Ryan with a serious knee injury. Nathan Longam was asking the Lions to dig deep and lift for the most important quarter third quarter. Nathan was moved into the centre in the third quarter and was providing plenty of forward thrust and Stuey James continued to convert. Stuey Baldwin was playing a brilliant game on the backline and Nick Fookes was proving plenty of support. Vice captain Mathew Quarrier (who was playing his first game) was rock solid in defence as was all the backline players. By the end of the third quarter the Lions had opened the lead out to 11 points.
In the last quarter the Lions played some of they're best footy. Stuey James kicked 2 goals and was responsible for setting up 2 others. Coach Nathan Longman played his best game for the year and is confident that the Lions can give the Cygnet boys a good run for their money this weekend when the Lions play the Port at Cygnet.

Underage only winners
The underage Lions started the season with a good win.
The reserves who have been a bit lazy during the past months had a slow start to the game against the Kermandie boys. The Kangaroos put on a few goals in the first quarter and had the Lions on the back foot from the start. The Lions came back in the second quarter with Johnny Butt and Brent Lovell playing well. Phil Bumford was starting to get his game going, Nick Crouch was playing well on the backline and Bazil McKenzie was one of our better players.
In the third and final quarter the Lions lack of fitness and game practice started to take its toll and the Kangaroos ran away with the game to win by 48 points. All players need to get behind the coach Steven (Runner) Reeve and put in the effort at training that will see the improvement on the ground on Saturdays.
Gone are the days when you can just turn up a few weeks before the start of the season and expect to be able to play out an entire game and, better still win the game for the club. Let's get serious and make an effort to support the club and more importantly the coach and the others within the team.
The seniors started well and at the end of the first quarter trailed the Kangaroos by a small margin. The Lions were winning the ball out of the centre through Nick Doyle, James Lange and new comers Nick Fookes and Chris Glenn. Jamie Huddleston was rucking well and suppling the ball well to the onballers. Gary Barwick was holding his marks on the backline and Rodney (Boggy) Lovell and Stuey James were converting up forward.
In the second quarter the supply from the onballers continued, until late in the second quarter when the Kangaroos started to get on top. The supply to the forward line dried up and the Lions were struggling to go forward and convert on the scoreboard.
By half time the margin had blown out to 4 goals. In the second half the Lions could only manage to kick a few minor scores and the Kangaroos had taken control of the game. The younger players in Nick Doyle, James Lange and first gamer Tony Lovell were trying hard. Jamie Huddlestone rucked well for most of the day. In the last quarter Nathan Longman tried to inspire the Lions but the game was out of reach and the Lions went down by 47 points, in what was a disappointing start to the season. The Lions need to regroup this week on the track and prepare for their first home game against Lauderdale.
Reminder to all players, members, supporters and followers that the club is holding its first official function this week at the clubrooms, Tarts and Gigolos night, starting at 8.00 pm, come along and enjoy what should be a great night.

Training Hard
The Lions have been training hard for the past months and on the weekend had a training camp at Camp Coningham. The boys arrived on Friday night and were required to start with a light run. The boys were then able to kick back and relax in preparation for a big day that had been arranged by Nathan and Scott Chilcott (fitness coach).
Saturday started with a big early morning run, breakfast and then activities that tested the boy's fitness, agility and overall strength and fitness levels. The boys trained until approx 3.00 pm before visiting the Snug Tavern. The Huonville Lions would like to thank Tony Marchant for his hospitality and warm welcome.
The boys returned to camp for a BBQ tea and then a much-needed rest. A highlight of the evening was a table tennis tournament that saw Adam Elwell and James Lange take out the championship and the 8 ball competition was won by Michael (Mumbles) Ryan and Jarrod Lovell.
Sunday started early with a light run and finished at the beach where the boys had to wade into the water and complete 2 laps of a track that had been designed by the hard taskmaster Nathan (coach) Longman.
The boys then hit the showers, breakfast and finished the camp off by sitting down and setting some personal and team goals for season 2003.
Thank you to all players that participated in the camp, to the coaching staff for arranging activities and making it an enjoyable and rewarding time for the players. Thank you to the management of Camp Conningham for providing us with a great weekend.

Information from all Coaches
Senior Coach (Nathan Longman) For those Huonville Lions Football Club supporters who didn't realize I am Nathan Longman the newly appointed senior coach for season 2003 and 2004.
Preseason training commenced on the 18th November and so far the numbers are promising. I am confident in the reaction that the players have already shown and with help from our new recruits Chris Glenn and Nick Fooks that 2003 is looking like the year that we will succeed and prove to our supporters that we have what it takes to play finals football. I am urging the community to get behind the club as your support is a key ingredient to the success of the Huonville Lions Football Club.
I look forward to your support for season 2003 and Merry Christmas to you all.
Reserves Coach (Steven Reeve) So far we have had a few Reserves started pre-season training "before Christmas" which has got to be a first. It really indicates that the guys are keen and want to make up for our early exit out of the finals last year. We haven't lost any players from last season, and with the young guys who all played well in their first year of senior and reserve footy, are only going to be better for it this year' putting more pressure on the senior guys. With our more experience players keener than ever, the likes of "Jumbo, The new look Gus, Strop (all young fellas) will be trying to help those guys play a lot more senior footy. So come on guys get on the track and get behind Nathan, Jimmy and myself and make it a successful year, let's get three teams in the finals, make it our goal, nothing less. I'd like to welcome David Johns back as bench Coach, Rod (Fingers) Powell as Team Manager, Rick Lovell as Runner, (if he's allowed). Rumour: A "Goose" could be found on the training track soon. Cheers and Merry Christmas to you all Runner Reeve.
Under 17's (Jimmy Bell) The Lions Under 17's have now been training two nights a week for near on two months. Their training has not been compulsory, yet the majority of last years players have been in attendance. The training has centered on weight training with the intention of building muscle and improving players overall strength. It has been pleasing to see that those players, who cannot make training of a night, have been getting the weight room key from myself and doing their weight training during the day. All the players have indicated their keenness to achieve more in this upcoming season.
The underage training will recommence on Monday 6 Jan 2003 and every Monday and Wednesday thereafter. Each training session till mid Feb will consist of pressure weights and ball work. All players are requested to be in attendance from Monday 13 Jan 2002. With the last years under 15 boys coming up and the retention of practically all of last years Colts, it will mean total commitment from all players who want to be a part of this side. They must train hard and continuously. Merry Christmas to all the under ages and their families and friends.
Once again from all at the Huonville Lions Football Club have a very Merry Christmas and a safe, prosperous and happy New Year. We will see you all at the footy in 2003 in what is shaping up to be an exiting year for the Lions.

Pre-season starts
It is pleasing to report that in excess of 60 players and supporters attended a "meet the coach" night with new coach Nathan Longman and the Reserves and Colts coaches Steven Reeve and Jim Bell on Wednesday 14 November at the clubrooms. Some players were unable to attend due to work and other commitments.
Among the players attending the meeting was last season's coach Rodney Lovell, the 2002 captain Michael Ryan and other senior players like Matt Sawdy, Stuart James and Adam Elwell, who sustained a serious injury towards the end of last season and is keen for a big pre season. It was also great to see the young players from last season there in force including the best and fairest winner Nick Doyle and the other youngsters including James Lange, Martin Doyle, Nick Crouch and Cam Jones, Troy Cordwell and Jay Lucas couldn't attend and put in an apology due to work commitments. Jamie Huddleston looked in great shape and with his new work arrangements will hopefully be available to put in a big pre season. There was also a good mix of other players throughout both the seniors and reserves grades.
Club President Scott Wilcox introduced the club coach, Nathan Longman and announced that Scott Chilcott will be on board as Fitness Coach. Nathan then elaborated on his past and also his plans for next season and the future. Scott also announced that further coaching and player recruitments are expected to be announced before Christmas.
Official pre-season training will commence on Wednesday 20th November at the Huonville Oval and will continue on Wednesday nights only at 6.00 p.m. up to the 18th December when a Christmas family party and BBQ will be held. Weight training and fitness work is being conducted in the visitors change rooms, set up by Jim Bell, Michael Ryan and the boys (well done lads) with the Under 17's training on Monday and Wednesday nights under Jim Bell and the seniors and Reserves on Tuesday and Thursday nights with Michael Ryan in attendance. Training will recommence after Christmas on the 13th of January at 6.00 p.m., other pre-season training sessions are planned and include family BBQ's, a training camp on 22nd February at Coningham and practice matches, further details will be provided later.
As the president of the club I would also like to take the opportunity to thank all of those committee members and loyal supporters who helped out at the Huon show last Saturday. The club operated a hot food stall, which was a very successful fundraiser for the club, but more pleasing was seeing the fun and comradeship, which is developing between our members.
Come along and be part of what is expected to be a big year for the Lions.

Longman gets the nod at the Lions den
The Huonville Lions Football Club are very please to announce that Nathan Longman will be coaching the Lions for season 2003 and 2004. Nathan has played approximately 200 games with Glenorchy and played in the 1999 grand final in which Glenorchy were premiers. Nathan also played in the 2001 grand final against Clarence but unfortunately were runners up on the day. Nathan has played under many experienced coaches such as Kim Excell, Paul Hamilton, Steven Reissig, Leigh McConnon and many more. Nathan is very keen to start working with the young Lions and is keen to maintain the youth development policy that the club has been enforcing for the past few years.
His wealth of experience will add a new dimension to the Club and along with the re-appointed Reserves Coach, Steven Reeve and Colts Coach, Jim Bell will combine to form a strong coaching panel that will lead the Lions into the future.

Excellent Grand final Effort by the young Colts
The club would like to congratulate Jimmy Bell and the young Lions in the way in which they conducted themselves on Saturday in the Grand Final. The support shown by the community was terrific and the boys need to be proud of their efforts and look forward to next season. The quality of players within this age group is a great sign for the future of the Huonville Lions Football club.
The Lions Under 17's proved on Saturday that they are a team of the future. This young side took the normal intimidation from Lauderdale on the chin. They matched and in most cases beat their much-fancied opposition in every department. The whole game was a seesawing event with there being no more than two goals between each team for the majority of the day.
The Lions were well supported in the forward line by their Captain Matt McCulloch who played his best game of the year. Nick Vermey dominated in the ruck and proved his versatility and endurance by playing that position all day. Patrick Kelly was another prime mover with a hard and disciplined game in the centre, his improvement in the latter part of the year will really stand him in good stead for next year.
Harley Thorp was again a rock at centre half and fullback, he was well assisted by Jeremy O'Neill who is also a vastly improved player. Aaron McCulloch and Andrew Paul both played their customary hard and determined game. David Langston when let loose on the ground did not let anyone down and was fierce and first to the ball, his improvement and commitment also a standout. Tony and Ricky Lovell both gave everything they could, Ricky especially did well considering it was his first game back from a broken collarbone. Joel Martyn played his heart out and Matt Sullivan although held for some of the day was inspirational when in attack.
The three quarter time lead of two goals was the best the Lions had been at this time in a game against Lauderdale all year. All the players believed that they could hold on for a win. This was not to be the case with Lauderdale winning by 8 points. Some atrocious umpiring decisions in the last half and in particular the last quarter were devastating for the young Lions. Lauderdale took advantage of these decisions and turned it over on the scoreboard. The Lions, however disappointed, showed true sportsmanship after the game and sat on the ground and viewed the entire Lauderdale premiership presentation.
Apart from the umpires decisions mentioned above, a good game of footy was marred by a prominent Lauderdale forwards disgraceful act in that he intentionally head butted and verbally abused a Lions player while shaking hands in the centre after the game.
Thanks again to all the families and supporters who were present at the game and to all the letters, phone calls and articles of support in the media for the Huonville Lions. Well-done boys and all concerned.
The Huonville Lions Football club would like to congratulate the Cygnet Football club on its great effort in winning the senior premier ship for season 2002. Well-done boys, great to see the cup being won by a Huon club.
Huonville Lions conducted its Best and Fairest for season 2002 on Sunday and the winners were as follows.
Congratulations to Mathew Sullivan Best and Fairest winner in the under age with Andrew Paul runner up. In the reserves the hard man Darren Cantwell was the winner followed by the old stager Ricky (Jumbo) Brown. In the seniors it was a very close contest with Nick Doyle winning followed by Michael Ryan (runner up) with James Lange and Marcus Bennett close behind.
The club would like to remind everyone of the annual dinner that will be held on Saturday 21st September at the clubrooms starting at 7.30pm. Come along to wind up the season 2002 and celebrate what has been a good development season for the Lions. It has been great to see so many of the younger players this year play in both the seniors and reserves.

Colts terrific season
The Huonville lions appointed 3 local coaches for the 2002 season to generate interest amongst the community and to encourage the local players back to the club. Jimmy Bell was appointed under age coach , Steven Reeves reserves coach and Rodney Lovell seniors coach.
Jimmy Bell has been coaching junior football for many years and last year coached the Huonville Lions under 15s to a premiership. Jimmy managed to keep a high percentage of the under 15s together and they are the nucleus of the under 17s for this season. The boys have had a terrific season and will be playing in the ultimate grand final today to finish off what has been a great season for the young colts. Jimmy has been inspirational in the way that he has lead the very young side, and the boys have applied themselves very well against much older sides in the competition. Good luck to Jimmy and all the players in the grand final today. On behalf of Jimmy, I would like to take this opportunity to thank all the parents and supporters that have helped him out during the year.
Steven Reeves returned to the club after a spell and has created a great deal of interest amongst the players and the community. Runner (as he is better known) coached the Huonville Lions to a reserves premiership in 1998 and had the same goals within his sights for this year. The reserves had a slow start to the year but managed to get it all together towards the business end of the season and cemented themselves within the final five. It was unfortunate that the boys only managed to play in one finals game, but on a positive note is was great to see a very young reserves side on the track that shows great promise for future of the club.
Rodney Lovell took on the job, coaching the young senior Lions for season 2002. Boggy (as we all know him) has worked hard all year to create interest amongst the locals and attempt to put a competitive side on the ground on a weekly basis. Boggy has been backed up by Dale Walker as assistant coach, Mick Garth chairman of selectors and captain Michael (Mumbles) Ryan. The seniors played some very positive football towards the end of the season, when they were able to have their coach on the ground to lead by example. It has been great to see a large number of young players in the seniors this season and once again it is very positive for the future of the Huonville Lions Football club. As the president of the football club I would like to thank all of the coaches, players, committee members, supporters and sponsors for the season 2002 and look forward to continual support for the club in 2003.
Reminder Best and Fairest count will be held at the clubrooms tomorrow 8th September starting at 11.00 am.

Colts continue finals campaign with a good win
In the reserves this was a game we needed to win to stay in the finals race. The game started at a blistering pace with Channel kicking away to an early lead, two goals that is and looked set to give the Lions a football lesson, but to our credit we never gave up, with Dean Harris and Justin Nandan producing some very exciting football and were well supported by Mitchell Sullivan and the ever reliable John Butt. These players started to bring other into the game like Wade Parremore and the tough nut Darren Cantwell. By the end of quarter time Channel held a 10-point lead. The second quarter saw Channel come out with all guns blazing and kicked away to a 23 point lead and it looked as though they where going too give the Lions an early exit from the finals race, it's easy to kick a lion when there down but isn't easy to kill a lion if there not dead and buried, and we weren't, the boys started to play the brand of football we know they can produce, and when they do they can beat any team. Stuart Baldwin was coming into the game and was setting up some inspirational play on the forward line and so was Brad Griggs, then Wade Parremore produced some Parremore magic and the Lions were coming back, and coming back we did, we were 1 point in front at the long break and things were looking good for a close one. The 3rd Quarter started much like the second with Channel leading the way on the score board with some very easy goals, it looked like the Lions were spent, but we persisted too stick with them and not let them kick away to a big lead, and then all of a sudden a huge all in brawl erupted and players come running from all parts of the ground to lend assistance, Channels interchange bench was running out of players as 3 came off with the blood rule, compared to our one and it was hard to keep the smile of Darren Cantwells face. This interruption unsettled the Lions and by the end of the quarter the boys found themselves down by 3-4 goals. The last quarter was set to be a real test for the Lions and they needed to play their best footy to give themselves every chance of staying in the finals race. Gus Nandan was rucking well and providing on ballers Tim Thorpe, John Butt and Darren Cantwell many opportunities to set up forward moves and get the Lions back in the game. Ricky Brown was working hard on one leg and lacked support up forward, the Lions managed to kick 3 goals in the last quarter but were unable to peg back the margin that the Saints had created in the third quarter and the Lions fell short by 16 points.
Congratulations to Steven Reeve and his coaching staff for all of their efforts for the year, and to all of the players that assisted through out the year. The club has seen this year as a very successful year where a lot of young players have been blooded and the future for the club looks great.
The club would like to call on all of its supporters to get behind the young colts and support them in their continual campaign for the ultimate grand final birth. This weekend the colts play Lauderdale at Lauderdale in the second semi final. Come along and support the future of the club and cheer on the Lions. Good luck to Jimmy and the boys.

Good last game performance from Seniors
The Colts started the day with a good win to consolidate second spot on the ladder and finish the roster matches on a high note. The boys now need to train hard and play their best footy to give themselves the best chance in the finals. Good luck, Jimmy and the boys.
The Reserves needed to win to gain third spot on the ladder. The coach had been working hard all week and had been stressing the importance of the game to all the players. The boys hit the ground with fire in the belly and were out to play a real game. On-ballers Tim Thorpe and Darren Cantwell were in everything and started the trend for the first quarter. The forwards in Jade Jones and Gus Nandan were providing a focal point and we kept in touch with the Port. By the end of the first quarter there were only a few points in the game.
The second quarter saw the trend continue with Johnny Butt and Dean Harris doing some good work and Darren Cantwell kicked a couple of goals. The Lions were working hard and by the end of the second quarter there was nothing in the game. The third quarter saw the Port kick away to create a break and it looked like the game was going to go their way.
The last quarter saw the Lions play some great footy with Brent Lovell, Brian Yates and Glenn Duggan holding the back-line together, while Tim Thorpe, Johnny Butt and Darren Cantwell continued their earlier good work and provided plenty of chances for the forwards. The Lions hit the lead with only a few minutes to go but could not stop the Port from kicking a late goal to secure the win. Great effort, and let,s work hard this week to ensure we put our best effort in for the first final.
The Seniors were out to prove a point to the Cygnet boys; that they where no easy push-over. In the first quarter the young Lions played some very strong footy with everyone putting in hard and playing to the team plan. Rodney Lovell was a focal point up forward and Dale Walker was rucking well and proving plenty of footy to the on-ballers in Michael 'Mumbles' Ryan and James Lange. Michael Burdon was playing his normal hard at style of footy and had a few of the Port boys looking around to see where he was coming from next. At the end of the first quarter the young Lions were only trailing by three goals and were playing good footy.
The second quarter saw the Lions outscore the Port and kick six goals to give them a real scare. Rodney 'Boggy' Lovell was giving the boys something to kick to and the back-line was playing well to keep their opponents at bay, while the onballers continue to work hard; everyone was contributing in what was a good quarter of footy.
After half time the Lions let themselves down when they allowed the Port to play ten minutes of their free-running game in which they opened up a handy lead. In the last quarter, the young Lions ran out of legs and allowed the Port to kick away to record a win. The Lions were well served by James Lange, Rodney Lovell, Nick Doyle, Martin Doyle, Stuart Baldwin and Stuart James. The Lions played some good footy on the day and showed that they can match it with the top sides. They just need to stick together for next season and Club will enjoy much more success. All senior players are encouraged to get along to watch the Colts and the Reserves next week and cheer our teams on.
The Club would like to take the opportunity to thank Steven Longey (Goodyear Tyre and Brake Services) for the trophies that he sponsored and presented to the best players on Saturday in all three grades. Thanks Snatch.
The Club would also like to thank all of the ladies who showed off their skills on Saturday night when they played against the under-age boys. A special mention to all Colts who played and allowed the ladies to enjoy what will be a annual event for the Club. Congratulations to all who participated in what was a great night. The kids enjoyed the chance to enjoy the disco following the ladies' match and feel a part of what is a great Club.
Good luck to the Colts and Reserves this week when they play Channel, the Colts in the qualifying final and the Reserves in the elimination final, both being held at Kermandie. Get along and support our boys and make sure that we have both sides competing again next week. The Club will have its 'Bay 13' set up and need as many supporters there as possible to cheer our players on.

Lions couldn't match intensity
The Reserves had to win to consolidate their third position on the ladder. We all knew during the week that it was going to be a hard fought and enduring match. It started well with Ricky Brown kicking two majors and and it was a positive early start. Jamie Huddleston was absolutely dominating the rucks and marking contests around the ground, Craig Thorpe, Tim Thorpe and Darren Cantwell were all scrounging kicks in front of the packs and things were looking good for the Lions. The nude-nut Glen Duggan's (always go hard at the ball) attitude was clear with him playing some inspiring footy on the back flank backed up by the big fella (Jason Pike) who himself was trying hard as always.
At the first break Steven 'Runner' Reeve had some stern words to say to the troops, a few positional moves to make and things looked good for a close game. Trent Lovell was playing his usual solid game and was well supported by the Parremore brothers Badger (Dean) and Wombat (Wade), who were both playing what look like backyard kick-to-kick, the boys picking each other out and playing a familiar Lions' brand of footy.
Sadly Craig Thorpe sustained a knock to the knee and had an early exit from the match and that put a bit of pressure on the mid field. John Butt started to come into the game and played the very tough, hard footy that we all have come accustomed to at the Lions' den, then Hudda takes a great mark and kicks a huge goal; inspiring stuff!
But as the match wore on the Cats kicked away to a hard-fought 48-point victory. It was good to see David Priest back from injury. With the finals just around the corner, let's all get together this week and put some hard yards at training and give it to our arch-rival Cygnet this Saturday at home. We need to win this one to get the double chance that would make our finals campaign much easier, so let's support Runner and really give it all this week on the track. By the way, let's put our hands together for Billy and Lionel who week-in and week-out do their finest to get the teams on the track. Well done fellas! Nor should we forget the waterboys, Rick (the runner) Lovell, and big boy David Johns.
In the Seniors, the young Lions started well but could not match the intensity of the fast running and hard Cats outfit. It looked as though we were in for a real thrashing as we were kept goal-less in the first quarter. To our credit we slogged it out the whole game. Good efforts in defense by Martin Doyle, Mick Ryan, and some good running by James Lange steadied the ship to give the boys some credibility and not let Lauderdale get too far in front.
The second quarter started much like the first, with Lauderdale dominating around the ground, turning defense into attack and making the Lions run their butts off. Adam Stevenson was starting to get some drive out of the middle of the ground and so was big Dale Walker. With plenty of opportunity on the forward line, the Lions started to get confident and move the ball with surgical precision, but they were unable to put the score on the board. Marcus Bennett was becoming a focal point up forward with the support of first gamer for the year, Rod Lovell.
In the second half, Huonville out-scored the Cats and played some great desperation-type footy. The backline continued to repel many attacks and the forward line started to convert when they went forward. The final score was not a true indication of how well the youngsters played, but the boys need to start much better this week to give themselves a chance against Cygnet.
Remember that the Ladies will be playing against the under-age side after the Senior game in a twilight spectacle starting at 6.30 pm. Come along and see some sights that we are not accustomed to when the ladies strut their stuff against the underage boys. I am not sure who is more excited about the game; the women or the young Colts.
Even after a week off, the Lions U/17's travelled to Lauderdale with three players out and at least six suffering with the flu. With the side decimated with injuries and illness, the boys were not expected to be as competitive as they had been in the past.
From the first bounce, Lauderdale had intentions of nullifying the Lions better players, Matt Sullivan was the prime target wearing the brunt of the oppositions behind the play indiscretions. The opposition also served notice to the younger smaller players by continually roughing them up off the ball. At no time during this quarter did the umpires even consider policing the off the ball incidents and from the way things were progressing it was evident that they had no control. At the end of the quarter the umpires were approached by Jimmy, the Lions coach. Jimmy identified himself to the umpires and implored them to pay more attention to the late tackles and off the play incidents which were frequently happening. Jimmy also advised the umpires that under his duty of care he would not have any hesitation in forfeiting the game and taking his team from the ground if the situation was not rectified. At no time was their standard of umpiring questioned, the intentions were specifically designed to ensure the safety of his players, especially the younger ones. Jimmy's actions were fully supported by the Club President and all of the parents at the ground. Better players for the quarter were Brad Johns, Tony and Ricky Lovell, Harley Thorp and Andrew Paul. Lauderdale led by 12 points at the first break.
The second quarter was a little tamer than the first, the Lions however were finding it hard to start functioning as one unit and subsequently let Lauderdale dictate the terms. Lauderdale kicked 5 goals 4 to the Lions 2 goals 1 to lead by 33 points at half time. Leigh Andrews did some very good work in the forward line to kick 2 goals. Sully and Joel Martyn continued to battle on while Harley Thorp persisted in keeping the Lauderdale changing players out of the play. Libba was again superb in his endeavour and began to get further involved as the game went on. This quarter was marred by a cowardly act when a Lauderdale player landed on Ricky Lovell after the play had past. This act resulted in Ricky breaking his collarbone and has now put him out for the remainder of the year. Bad luck Ricky and well played for the year.
At half time the boys were very bitter at both the opposition and their own performance. The only way to get rid of that bitter taste was to up the skill level and determination to achieve the goals as previously set. With only one on the bench, options were limited but some major changes in the third quarter say a rejuvenated Lions outfit start to apply the pressure with run on footy to slowly start dwindling the Lauderdale lead down. Matt Conlans move to the wing assisted in opening lots of opportunities as did the move of Aaron McCulloch to the backline. Both Matt and Aaron really started to fire from this point. Aaron Free came onto the ground and gave the team a much needed boost by taking a fine mark then goaling, lucky the umpire ducked Azzer. Patrick Kelly responded to his coaches request to get more involved, this Patrick did, his work rate increased and subsequently his possessions also increased. Lauderdales onballers brought Bushy Thorp into the game, wherever they went he was equal to the task and popped up beside or in front of them. Nick Vermey was now taking some big grabs and exert his authority. The boys were now starting to back their judgement and take a few risks, they could feel the game coming back their way, everyone started to lift. Scores at the last change were Lauderdale 8-8-56 to the Lions 4-4-30.
The last quarter was definitely won by the Lions, their failure to kick direct and convert was the difference, many an opportunity was squandered by inaccurate kicking. This quarter was a big affair with all players contributing. Libba again was fierce and determined and certainly lived up to his nickname. Nick Vermey gave the Lions continual and constant drives out of the backline with his mammoth kicking. James Hope threw off his bug and stopped numerous attacks. Johnsy, playing his best game for the year never gave in. Matt McCulloch was a driving force in the last, he was very elusive and took advantage of some undisciplined play by the opposition. Will Wright who worked hard in the ruck all day was gaining valuable support around the ground from Sully and Joel Martyn. Brad Lovell and Cam Fitzpatrick played well considering the fact that they have been very crook for a while, it was pleasing to see both these boys and Craig Thorp start to get some possessions. Christian Ledergerber although limited in opportunities was also in the thick of things. The good last quarter, and the fact that the whole team was lifting was the prime reason why these younger boys started to lift, this will do their confidence the world of good. At the final siren Lauderdale had won by 17 points. The Lions had restricted them to 4 behinds while they kicked 2 goals 3. It was a rather ordinary effort by the Lauderdale club to keep their scoreboard operational during the U/17s. The scoreboard still showed the half time score at the final siren. Had the scoreboard been up to date at all times, our boys would have had a clearer idea of how close they were getting. This would have assisted our boys in the last half, then again this could have been a part of the Lauderdale game plan.
The way the boys backed each other up and turned the last half in their favour demonstrated that they are a determined side who ARE NOT WILLING TO GIVE UP. As they left the field you could not help but see that they were just as happy as they would have been had they have won. Top effort fellas.
Let's all look after the future of our clubs by teaching our youth to play the game hard but FAIR so they can ENJOY their footy and hopefully progess to bigger and better things. Finally, congratulations to Leigh Proud for a well deserved 100 goals for Lauderdale, from all the Huonville Lions under 17's.

Last half revival from Seniors
The day started with the Huonville Primary School (coached by Michael Ryan) playing against Franklin Primary (coached by Marcus Bennett) with a couple of Glen Huon boys helping out. The Franklin boys started well when they kicked the first goal in about 30 seconds of play. The Huonville boys hit back and scored their first and leveled the game. By the end of the first quarter Huonville had a small lead. Franklin fought back and gave Huonville a scare towards the end but were unable to peg back the margin. Both teams played some great footy and showed great skills. Well done to all of the boys who played and to Mick Garth and both coaches for arranging a great game in the absence of the Colts' game.
In the Reserves it was a great opportunity for the Huonville Lions to have a hard crack at Claremont and to consolidate their position on the ladder, and also to get Claremont thinking, especially before the finals. But, well, what can one say? After a good start and early goals from Ricky Brown, good play from Gus Nandan, and on-ballers Tim Thorpe, Craig Thorpe, we were in with a show at quarter time.
The second term started like the first where we dominated in most areas but could not finish off. We saw a great effort in the ruck by Nathan Reynolds who was trying his best to outplay a bigger and tougher opponent. Darren Cantwell was also trying very hard, but in one such incident he tried too hard; with eyes on the ball and going straight through, he cleaned up Mick Jones (who by the way is as tough as old boot laces). Micky didn't mind; just said that Dazza had the right of way and shrugged it off. Well done, Mick! Gus Nandan was moved into the ruck and was a very dominant player for the Lions, giving some real good palm-outs to our small brigade which was winning most of the hard ball gets.
The last half of the match was a one-sided affair with Claremont kicking away for a twelve goal win. Sadly, the scoreboard showed the convincing win to Claremont, but for statisticians, our boys had as much of the play, and if not for some turnovers and bad passing we could have given this game a real shake to head towards the finals with a lot of confidence.
Well, let's all get out onto the training track and have a hard run this week and show Runner that we are a committed outfit and want to play finals' football and aim for, most of all, a Grand Final berth. Good players for the Lions were none better than Tim Thorpe, Gus Nandan, Ricky Brown, Craig Thorpe, Darren Cantwell, Trent Lovell, Daniel Thorpe, Jon Butt and Jason Pike. Also, well done Steven Reeve; it was Runner's first game back after being off for four weeks because of a calf strain. We think he's been really enjoying his role as non-playing coach for a while; just ask David Johns.
The Seniors were out to improve on their performance from last week. From the first bounce they were harder at the ball and the on-ballers were working hard in an attempt to move the ball forward at every chance. The forwards were unable to capitalise on the chances and Claremont moved the ball out of defence and set up their goals too easily. Jade Jones was rucking well, but was not being supported by his smaller players who were failing to get the taps and make use of his good work. By the end of the first quarter Claremont had opened up an early five goal break.
The second quarter saw the Lions play a more defensive role, and to the boys' credit, they kept the Claremont team to three goals and managed two goals themselves. Michael Burdon was inspirational in the way he was running hard at the ball and applying tackles on the much bigger opponents. Jade Jones continued to ruck well and James Lange was working hard in and around the packs. Marcus Bennett was industrious on the forward line but was not being supported by his teammates and the Lions were unable to convert when the ball went into the forward line.
In the second half the young Lions played their best footy. They were much harder at the ball and applied more pressure to opponents all over the ground. The on-ballers started to capitalize on the good ruck work from Jade Jones and managed to move the ball out of the center to set up forward moves. Todd Cordwell came into the game when he was moved into the center and Marcus Bennett, Nick Crouch and Stuart James kicked goals; the Lions forward line was functioning much better.
The endeavor that the young Lions showed was encouraging for the coaching staff. The Claremont team was being well held by them. In the last quarter the Lions out-scored the Claremont team by maintaining the pressure they had applied in the third quarter and displayed some good passages of play. On the day no-one tried harder than Jade Jones, Michael Burdon who tackled well and ran hard at the ball throughout the game, James Lange for his good work in center and around the packs, Marcus Bennett who kicked two goals and worked hard all day and Jay Lucas and Dean Harriss who likewise played a solid four quarters.
The Lions travel to Lauderdale this week in what is a critical game for both the Colts and the Reserves. The Reserves need to win to maintain their third spot and give themselves the second chance come the finals. The Colts need to play well against the Cats to show that they will definitely be a threat come finals time. The Seniors played well last time at Lauderdale and will be looking at building on that effort in an endeavour to cause an upset. Come along and support the Lions this weekend.
On Saturday the Palais Theatre in Franklin was resplendent with sartorially-attired ladies and gentlemen of the Huon when the Club held a Ball. Never have so many muddy footballers looked so impressively good, as were their equally dazzling partners. To great music and complementary champagne, the revellers danced the night away.
The last wheelbarrow was won by members of the band who played at the Grand Hotel. There will be an Underage Disco this week; remember the times: 7.30 till 10pm.

2 Wins and a poor performance from the seniors
Once again the under age started well and recorded a 39 point victory.
The reserves started very well and in the first quarter and opened up a handy lead. Tim Thorpe was setting up many forward moves and was being well supported by on ballers Johnny Butt and Darren Cantwell. The forward line was functioning well with Ricky Brown working hard and Jamie Huddleston providing a focal point at center half forward. By half time the boys had extended their lead and started to get on top of the Saints. Great to see big Gus Nandan back on the paddock and in the last half was put in the ruck to run himself into some much needed fitness, and to the big fellows credit he didn't let Runner down. The backline was well held by the youngsters in Brent Lovell, Shane Kean and the old stager Brain Yates. Mitchell Sullivan was playing another great game and repelled many attacks when on the backline and when moved to other positions produced the goods for his coach. The reserves played the game out well and to their credit they ran out victors on the day by 38 points. Coach Steven Reeve has the boys playing well at the right time of the year and with three games to go has set a target of winning the next three games against the top sides. It is up the players to get on the track and support Runner and make it happen for the Lions.
The seniors who have been hit by more injuries came into the game with some new faces. The players were not hard enough at the ball and found themselves second to every contest from the start. Adam Stevenson and Michael Ryan tried to get the ball moving from the centre but the forwards where unable to capitalise and Channel ran the ball out with ease to set up their goals. Nick Doyle tried hard all day on the backline but support was not being provided from his teammates. The Lions turned the ball over too many times and every time they did Channel kicked goals. When the Lions did go into attack they could not hold their mark and or keep the ball in the forward line and once again the Saints ran the ball out and kicked easy goals. Good players where hard to find on the day, Nick Doyle, Adam Stevenson, Stuart Baldwin, Troy Cordwell and James Lange were the only players that could be mentioned. The seniors need to be much harder at the football next week to gain some much-needed respect back from the opposition and from their loyal supporters. Come on Lions let's finish off the season with a big improvement.
The club is holding its Ball at the Palais Theatre this Saturday night and will be hoping that all of the players, supporters, sponsors and members will be out in force to make it a great night. Ball starts at 8.00 pm dress "After 5 ", gentleman wear a tie please.
Congratulations to the Huonville Lions under 15s in winning the grand final last weekend. The under 13s played well all day but were unlucky at the end of the day and just missed out. Congratulations to all of the players that played in the finals, congratulations to both coaches Peter Wallace (under 15s) and to Peter Driessen (under 13s) well done.
The Huonville Lions Aus Kick players will be taking part in a gala day this Sunday at Channel. Come along and watch the young Lions in action in what is a great chance to see the up and coming future of the club. Games start at 10.00 am
The club is attempting to have two schools play a game this Saturday in the absence of the under age game. It is hoped that this game will start at approx 10.00 am and will give the boy s a chance to play in front of a big crowd at the Huonville Lions ground.
Come along and support the club this weekend and cheer on the Lions.

Two wins, one loss for Lions
The Lions traveled to Kermandie on Saturday to take on the Kangaroos, where the Colts started the day in fine form with a massive 132 point win.
The Reserves started the game slowly and were under attack from the Kangaroos from the outset. At the end of the first quarter they found that they had a game on their hands. Johnny Butt and Tim Thorpe were working hard but the forwards were unable to convert and the Kangaroos scored their goals at will.
In the second quarter, the Lions started to get their game plan working; the Priest brothers and Mitchell Sullivan were getting into the game and Ricky 'Jumbo' Brown started to get on the end of a few passes up forward and converted. By half time they recovered ground and had a slender lead.
Following the main break and an impassioned plea from Steven 'Runner' Reeve, the boys came out in a better frame of mind and played some better footy. Jason Pyke went into the ruck and started to give the on-ballers first use of the ball. David Priest, Johnny Butt and others started to move the ball out of the center and set up many goals for Ricky Brown and Wade Parremore. Brian Yates, Brent Lovell and Shane Kean were brilliant on the backline and repelled many attacks.
In the last quarter the Lions played their best footy, moving the ball quickly into the forward line where the forwards worked hard to score. Ricky Brown finished the day with four, Craig Thorpe, two, and evergreen Dennis Walker chipped in for one and was instrumental in setting up many more for the Lions. The Lions were best served by Mitchell Sullivan who played well to shut down the Kangaroos' runners, David Priest, and Jason Pyke who rucked well in the last half. Congratulations to the Lions on a great fight back and a well earned win.
The Seniors were keen to make amends for the first game defeat that they suffered when they last played the Kangaroos. The Lions started well and managed to kick the first goal of the day. They were moving the ball smoothly and Dale Walker was playing well in the ruck and providing on ballers with good first use of the ball. By the end of the first quarter the Lions held a slender six point lead. Toddy Cordwell was working hard and was being well supported by Adam Stevenson, James Lange and Michael 'Mumbles' Ryan.
In the second quarter the Kangaroos came back at the Lions and the back line found itself under attack. Nick Crouch was playing well along with Michael Burdon and Martin 'Ace' Doyle. By the half time the Kangaroos had fought back to gain a two goal lead at half time. The Lions were getting more of the ball than the Kangaroos but couldn't finish off and turned the ball over too many times which allowed the Kangaroos easy goals.
Rodney Lovell was steaming at half time and let them know all about it. The team came out after half time needing to lift their skill level and to maintain the pressure that they had been applying earlier. The forward line started to convert with Marcus Bennett and Mathew Quarrier kicking goals.
By three quarter time the Seniors were only two goals behind. Dale Walker continued to ruck well and Todd Cordwell was running well and setting up many forward moves. On-ballers Adam Stevenson and James Lange continued to work hard but the Kangaroos were too strong and ran out winners by 38 points.
The Lions had as much of the play as the Kangaroos but failed to finish off and keep possession of the ball. The boys need to work hard this week to give themselves a better chance against Channel this week.
The Club would like to take this opportunity to thank all of those who played in the golf day on Sunday in what was a great event. A special thank you to Jimmy James for his time and effort and to all the sponsors who supported the day, and also the Huon Valley Golf Club for its hospitality and to all of those people who helped.
The Club would also like to take this opportunity to wish the Huonville Lions under 13s and under 15s all the best this week end when they play in the mini- league Grand Final at Cygnet. Good luck to both sides.

Three good wins for the Lions
The Club registered three good wins on Saturday with the Colts recording a 62 point win, the Reserves, a big win by 137 points and the Seniors, a 73 point win.
The Club was hosting a day for its new members, and was keen to make sure that all grades put on a good display.
The Reserves started well and never looked back. With Mick Garth and Ricky Brown up forward causing the opposition headaches and Johnny Butt chipping in to kick goals at will, the Dodges boys were finding it hard to match up with the Lions. Jamie Huddleston was inspirational at center half back and in the ruck. It didn't matter where Runner put him, he seemed to be in everything. On-ballers Tim Thorpe, the Priest brothers and Chris Shaw were getting the ball out of the center and setting up many forward moves. Nathan Reynolds and Kevin Lempa were rucking well and giving the little guys first use of the ball. By the end of the first quarter the Lions had a handy lead.
In the second quarter, the goals continued with flow for the Lions. Mick Garth continued to use his experience and Jumbo Brown was doing his fair share of the work. Jamie Huddleston was again into everything; rucking, kicking goals and setting up many forward moves. By half time the Lions were looking at a high percentage booster.
The trend continued in the last quarter with everyone playing well and coach Runner Reeves was looking pretty happy. At the end of the day no one played better than Chef Jamie Huddleston (who missed out on the best player mug due to work commitments). Johnny Butt stepped in to take the mug and made a good account for himself both on the ground and after. The Priest brothers played well as did two oldies up forward, Mick Garth and Jumbo Brown, who kicked eleven between them. Runners is aiming at winning as many games as possible leading up the finals and needs all players on the track to maintain the pressure on each other and to keep their spots.
The Seniors had a good warm up and ran onto the field this weekend in front of a small but keen crowd. Rodney Lovell had been enforcing the importance of the game during the week and had the boys pumped. Dale Walker was getting his hand on the ball and setting up the smaller players in Mumbles Ryan, James Lange and Troy Cordwell. They were working well and moved the ball well into the forward line where Marcus Bennett and Matthew Quarrier where doing some good work. Matthew fed off many handballs that resulted in goals and Marcus was finishing off well himself.
By the end of the first quarter the Lions had a four goal break. The second quarter saw a fight back from the Dodges boys and they managed to peg the margin back to three goals and the Lions went into the long break concerned about their dwindling lead.
The second half saw the Lions play a more positive style of footy and they started to move the ball well. Dale Walker was doing a good job in the ruck and James Lange continued to get plenty of the ball. Michael Ryan was on and off the ground with a cut head but still kept on getting kicks. Troy Cordwell was playing one of his better games for the year and was covering a lot of ground and getting plenty of the ball. Dean Harris was playing well on the wing and continued to set up many forward moves.
In the last quarter Matthew Quarrier stole the show when he kicked four goals. He had been giving all of his goals away up until then, but in the last started to pull down some good marks and finished off by kicking the goals; a great welcome back to footy for Matthew. At the end the Lions ran out big winners with everyone contributing to a great win. The Dodges boys took out the boat race after the game in a impressive display. Thank you to all of the Dodges players that made the effort to have a chat and drink after the game in a great display of sportsmanship.
The Lions travel to Kermandie this week to take on the Kangaroos and need to win in all three grades to keep up the winning spirit. Good luck Lions.
2/7/02
Huonville Lions traveled to Lindisfarne last week and came away with wins in the Seniors and Reserves and a surprise loss to the Colts.
The Reserves managed to make up enough numbers with a lot of players out with injuries, sickness or work commitments. The Reserves hit the ground with Craig Thorpe leading the way due to Runner being out with an injury.
The game started out at a reasonable pace with both sides struggling up forward to convert. It was the Lions who got the first goal with tall timber up forward in Jade Jones, (welcome back ) Lyndon Stevenson and Ricky (Jumbo) Brown causing many headaches for the opposition. The Lions' on-ballers were setting up many forward moves with Darren Cantwell playing another great game, and Brad Griggs, Tim Thorpe and big man Nathan Reynolds doing a great job. By half time the Lions had a small break and needed to maintain the pressure to shake off the Blues.
After half time the Lions kept up the pressure and maintained a handy lead. Andrew Cordwell made the run of the day when he ran the full length of the ground (with the ball) to put himself in a position to kick a goal. However. in his usual unselfish way he passed the ball off to Jumbo, who to Luggsy's disgust, missed the goal. Don't worry Luggs, we have the whole thing on video so you won't have to tell everyone about it. Darren Cantwell was in everything; he was getting the ball out of the center and even attempting to kick goals himself - I think Darren has agreed to leave the goal kicking to the forwards. At the end of the day the Lions ran out winners by 34 points and had a great win. All played well for the Lions with Brad Griggs, Tim Thorpe, Darren Cantwell, Jade Jones (with 3 goals), and Brent Lovell and Gary Priest on the backline playing an excellent game.
The Seniors needed to win to instill some much needed confidence into the young Lions. The boys started slowly and allowed the Blues to kick the first 2 goals. The Lions fought back and by the end of the first quarter were three goals up. Toddy Cordwell ( who gave away at least a foot to his opposition ruckman ) was getting the taps and setting up many forward moves with James Lange, Michael Ryan and Troy Cordwell getting the ball out of the center.
The second quarter was an even contest with both sides kicking two goals each and the Lions went into the half time break with a three goal break. The third quarter was similar to the second with neither side making head way. Todd Cordwell continued to ruck well, with James Lange, Michael Burdon and Adam Elwell playing well on the backline.
The last quarter saw the Blues make a big come back and get to within nine points of the Lions who had stopped. The Lions needed to find something to keep the Blues at bay. It was Dean Parremore who kicked a goal to relieve some pressure. The Lions, who had not been playing very well, managed to hold off the Blues and run out winners by eighteen points. Marcus Bennett and Dale Walker were the main goal kickers with the on-ballers in Todd Cordwell, James Lange, Troy Cordwell playing well all day. The backline, who where under siege in the last quarter, were lead by Michael Burdon and Adam Elwell.
The Lions need to be better prepared this week when they host Dodges Ferry at home. Coach Rodney (Boggy) Lovell needs to make sure that the boys are keen and ready to play the full game. Good luck this week to all grades!
Our membership BBQ day will be held this Saturday. All our new members are invited to come along and enjoy our sausage sizzle, meet other Club members, players, officials and sponsors in a great day being hosted by Leon Duggan from Duggan's Tyre Stop. All card-holding members are welcome.
On Saturday night we are having a Crazy Hat Disco.
COLTS REPORT
The lead up to the Lindisfarne game was not an ideal way to approach a game of footy. After a good night at the Aquatic centre on Monday, training on Thursday can be best forgotten. There were numerous withdrawals from the team due to injury or illness, training was nothing but disappointing with individuals wanting to do their own thing and players giving in or continually whingeing. On Friday some players decided to stay up to all hours, without any consideration to football the next day. This lack of commitment and discipline by a some of the team in their lead up to the weekend games has been evident for some weeks. Any further undisciplined or lack lustre approaches to weekend footy will not be tolerated by Jimmy as coach or the Club. Team rules will again be discussed this week and rigorously enforced.
To the game, such a lead up as Huonville's has it's consequences, as was evident on Saturday. Lindifarne approached the game with nothing to lose, they were fearless, dedicated and well disciplined, this culminating in a win, just rewards for their efforts. The Lions had some good players who busted their guts all day, their efforts, unfortunately were not rewarded. The remainder of the team seemed disinterested, they were flat, slow, dysfunctional, inconsistent and even at times SCARED. Coaches instructions, Team Rules and the Teams Game Plan/s were not adhered to. A very disappointing effort from such a good team. People may think the above comments are too critical or may even be detrimental, well if that is the case let it be, the Truth sometimes does hurt, but is also in this case a necessary means to an end. Come on boys, lets Regroup, refocus and push on.

Huonville Lions hosted Cygnet on Saturday and recorded 1 win and 2 losses.
The young Colts got back on the winning track with a good win against the Cygnet boys.
The Lions Under 17's took on a very determined Cygnet at Huonville, although the Lions did not have it their own way all the game. The majority of the players did not start to hit their straps until the end of the first quarter. The better players in the first quarter were Matt Sullivan, Andrew Paul, Patrick Kelly, Leigh Andrews and Matt McCulloch. The second quarter was a vast improvement on the first and the previous weeks second quarters. The backline was full of endeavour and commitment, Ricky and Tony Lovell again providing the team with drive, their sheer determination and hard running was a pleasure to watch. Equally as good in the backline was Bushy Thorp and Brad Johns; both these players displayed some wonderful team work and fed off each other all day.
Johnsy seemed to relish his move up from fullback. David Langston and James Hope, although not over inundated with work, were exceptional in the way they attacked the ball and guarded their turf. Again Sully and Libba were outstanding. Daniel Longey, Joel Martyn, Matt McCulloch and Brad Lovell were working their way into the game, while Will Wright and Nick Vermey continued their good work around the ground.
A pat on the back at half time again seemed to go to players' heads; the third quarter was very ordinary. Taking nothing away from Cygnet they came out pumped up and made the Lions work hard for everything. The Lions lacked that desperation that they have been renown for after half time. Better players in the third quarter were Sully, Libba, Joel Martyn and Matt Conlan. The last quarter was a vast improvement on the third. The ever reliable Sully and Libba, who were well supported by the new revamped forward line, proceeded to gain momentum to record a good win.
Special mentions on the day go to Patrick Kelly who played his best game this year, Leigh Andrews for the way he attacked the ball in the contests, Joel Martyn who has been a little down in the past but proved that he is on his way back to the top, Daniel Longey for his hard, honest and determined approach to footy, the smaller brigade in the forward line and Tony and Ricky in the backline. The team is starting to get back to the level they were in early in the year, a full commitment for four quarters is not far off. Keep on improving, boys.
The reserves started the game well and where showing some good signs, with Jaime Huddleston (who was playing in the reserves due to work commitments) Charlie Reeve and Tim Thorpe getting the ball out of the center and setting up many forward moves. Darren Cantwell was picking up from where he left last week and was lending good support to all of his teammates. At the end of the first quarter it was very even with nothing in the score.
The second was an even contest with both sides playing some good footy; Mathew Quarrier was playing a great game at Center half back and was being well supported by Ricky Brown, who was playing at fullback and with the younger player in Brent Lovell playing a serviceable game.
By half time the Lions had a small margin and where keen to keep up the intensity. In the third quarter the Lions kicked away to what look to be a winning margin. The Port came back in the last quarter and kicked a bag of goals to register a good win by 32 points. For the Lions no one played better than Mathew Quarrier, Darren Cantwell, Jumbo Brown and Timmy Thorpe. Runner will be keen to keep the boys confidence up for next week's game and will have the boys working hard on the track this week.
The seniors needed to play with the intensity that they played with last week if they where going to be any match with the Port. From the start the Lions where going in hard but where not able to keep possession of the ball and turned the ball over too much and the Port capitalized on the Lions mistakes and kicked easy goals. James Lange was working hard by getting on the bottom of every pack and feeding the ball out to his team-mates who were unable to use the ball properly and continued to give the Port to many easy possessions.
Stuey James was playing a good game on the backline and Dale Walker was doing some good work in the ruck. By the end of the first quarter the Port had opened the game out and lead by four goals.
In the second quarter the trend continued. The Lions had as much of the play but were unable to score when they went forward, and only managed to kick the one goal for the quarter. By half time the Port had a nine-goal break. The third quarter was even worse for the Lio
