Southern Football League About AFL ST
The S.F.L (Southern Football League trading as AFL Southern Tasmania) is the largest football competition in Tasmania with 18 clubs affiliated. They are Brighton, Central Hawks, Channel, Claremont, Clarence, Cygnet, Dodges Ferry, Glenorchy, Hobart, Huonville, Kermandie, Kingborough, Lauderdale, Lindisfarne, New Norfolk, North Hobart, Sorell, & Triabunna. The SFL is affiliated with AFL Tasmania.
- The league fields a Seniors, Reserves and Under 19's & Under 17's competition.
- The league has an independent tribunal which sits in judgement on reports issued by umpires.
- The League was formed in 1996 with the merging of the Southern Amateurs and 2 teams from the Huon Football Association. The league was then known as the Southern Tasmanian Football League (S.T.F.L.)
- The original clubs were Brighton, Claremont, Lachlan, Lindisfarne, Lauderdale and Sorell from the Amateurs and Kingston and Channel coming from the Huon.
- In 1998 the League changed it's name to the Southern Football League.
- In 1998, the 3 remaining Huon teams were admitted to the league; Cygnet, Kermandie and the Huonville Lions ( a merged club from the Huonville and Franklin clubs ).
- Hobart also joined in 1998 following the clubs forced withdrawal from the statewide competition, the TFL (Tasmanian Football League)
- In 2000 the New Norfolk Hawks entered the league after being forced out of a rationalised TFL.
- Following the demise of the Statewide League (the former TFL) in late 2000, the league increased in size with the addition of another three former SWL clubs - Clarence, Glenorchy and North Hobart.
- In 2001 the league voted to split the competition into two divisions of eight teams.
In division one - Brighton, Clarence, Glenorchy, Hobart, Kingston, New Norfolk, North Hobart and Sorell
and in division two - Channel, Claremont, Cygnet, Dodges Ferry, Huonville, Kermandie, Lauderdale and Lindisfarne.
These two leagues are now known as the Premier and Regional Leagues.
- In 2003 Sorell went into recess creating a bye in the Premier League competition. However at the annual AGM Sorell was readmitted in to the Regional League paving the way for Lauderdale to move into the Premier League for 2004.
- In 2005 the league voted to admit two new clubs into the Regional Leagues
bringing the total number of clubs to 18. These two clubs were Central Hawks (an
amalgamation of Oatlands and Bothwell) and Triabunna. Both clubs left the ODFA
to join the SFL in 2006.
